The Depot Theatre Kicks Off New Seats with Celebration!

Westport’s Depot Theatre will be hosting an open house on Sunday, July 2, 2017, from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm for the public get their first look at the theatre’s new capital improvements. These include a new wifi system; new lighting grid; new flooring and carpeting in the theatre; and brand new seats complete with aisle lighting! These improvements were made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Charles R. Wood Foundation, the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust, and generous donors from the community who contributed to the Depot’s capital campaign.

Visitors will explore the theatre in depth, including back stage tours. Works by local artist Linda Smyth are on display in the lobby. Alisa Endsley, Depot Theatre trustee and experienced Broadway singer, will guide visitors in a celebratory sing-along. Light refreshments will be provided.

“We hope everyone can join us and help us celebrate all the new improvements to the theatre. It’s also a great opportunity to see some of the backstage areas not normally open to the public,” says Producing Director, Kevin Cochran.

The Depot Theatre Young Actor Apprentice Program Offers a Well-Rounded Theatrical Experience in a Professional Setting

The Depot Theatre is pleased to announce their Young Actor Apprentice Program for aspiring artists from ages 11 to 15. The program runs from June 27 to August 3 with rehearsal/workshops held Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm with several additional Depot Special Event dates (all dates posted on the Depot website). Participants will learn about a wide range of theatrical areas including playwrighting, set and costume design, voice and movement, improvisation, acting and performance.

Throughout the program, the apprentices will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the professional artists working at the Depot Theatre this summer. They’ll also be invited to watch the dress rehearsal of the season’s first play as well as the preview performance.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to keep the inspired leadership of Scott Gibbs and Lindsay Pontius who have guided the program so successfully for many years,” says Depot Producing Director Kevin Cochran. “On top of that, we’re also creating many new opportunities for our apprentices to interact with our professional performers, designers, directors and playwrights. It makes the Apprentice Program an experience that’s truly unique in the area.”

The program will finish with 3 public performances that will showcase the honing of the young artists’ skills. It will be a memorable and enjoyable summer experience that emphasizes acting skills and other theatrical knowledge in a professional environment.

*For the first time, the Depot is offering a special Preview Night performance for each main stage production on the first Friday of that production’s run at 8PM. Preview Night dates for 2017 are: July 7, July 28, and August 11. A Preview Night performance is a fully-rehearsed and staged performance, although some directorial decisions may be changed for future performances, and it is offered at a lower price to make theatre more accessible for everyone in the community.

Policies: Seating is subject to availability. Tickets are non-refundable. There is a $3 fee for ticket exchanges. To help defray the costs of maintaining our historical building, a $1 facility fee will be added to each ticket. Upgrade charges apply when exchanging Preview Night tickets to non-preview performances. A processing fee may be added to tickets purchased on-line. This fee is charged by a third-party provider, PrintTixUSA, the company which provides the service.

The Box Office is open from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday during the month of June. Open from 1PM through showtime on performance days.

There’s still time to buy a subscription!

The flexible 3-Show Subscription ($83 Adult; $77 Senior/Student) includes one ticket to each main stage show and you choose the performance dates. As always, exchanges are free for 3-Show Subscribers.

Our Preview Night Subscription ($60) offers one ticket to each production on the first Friday of that production’s run at 8PM. Date for 2017 are: July 7, July 28 and August 11.

The Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust Awards the Depot Theatre with Grant for Theatre Improvements

The Depot Theatre, a not-for-profit organization committed to providing professional theatrical arts in the Adirondacks, has received a grant for theatre improvements from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust.

The Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust has awarded the Depot with a grant of $6,710 to replace the theatre’s aging lighting grid. “The new lighting grid will improve and expand the theatre’s technical capabilities for our designers and technicians,” said Kevin Cochran, the Depot’s Producing Director.

The grant provides half of the funds for the project, of which the remainder will come from the theatre’s recent theatre improvement fundraising campaign, which began last summer. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds for infrastructure improvements including new seats, new carpeting, aisle lighting, expanded WiFi service and other projects. “Improvements such as these allow us to fulfill our mission of producing professional theatre for our community,” said Erin Harrington, business manager at the Depot.

“We are so pleased that the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust has decided to support this important project,” said Amy McNamara, president of the Depot Theatre Board of Trustees. Donors to the theatre improvement campaign include numerous individuals from the community, the Charles R. Wood Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts.

The Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was established to benefit nonprofit scientific, medical, educational, cultural, religious, and charitable organizations by funding project and programs in memory of the Trust’s founder, Alfred Z. Solomon. Mr. Solomon, a leader in the fashion industry, a horse racing enthusiast, and a philanthropist in Gansevoort, N.Y., and New York City, died on Sept. 4, 2004, at the age of 104, and founded the Trust in his Last Will and Testament.
