The Depot Theatre is pleased to announce their Young Actor Apprentice Program for aspiring artists from ages 11 to 15. The program runs from June 27 to August 3 with rehearsal/workshops held Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm with several additional Depot Special Event dates (all dates posted on the Depot website). Participants will learn about a wide range of theatrical areas including playwrighting, set and costume design, voice and movement, improvisation, acting and performance.

Throughout the program, the apprentices will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the professional artists working at the Depot Theatre this summer. They’ll also be invited to watch the dress rehearsal of the season’s first play as well as the preview performance.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to keep the inspired leadership of Scott Gibbs and Lindsay Pontius who have guided the program so successfully for many years,” says Depot Producing Director Kevin Cochran. “On top of that, we’re also creating many new opportunities for our apprentices to interact with our professional performers, designers, directors and playwrights. It makes the Apprentice Program an experience that’s truly unique in the area.”

The program will finish with 3 public performances that will showcase the honing of the young artists’ skills. It will be a memorable and enjoyable summer experience that emphasizes acting skills and other theatrical knowledge in a professional environment.

Students can register online at www.depottheatre.org/apprentice-program or simply call the Depot Theatre Box Office at 518.962.4449. There is a $50.00 registration fee per student with work/study scholarships available on request.

Our 2017 Young Actors Apprentice Program is assisted by a Stewart’s Holiday Match Grant.

The Depot’s 39th Season kicks off with a hysterical new comedy (featuring penguins AND promiscuity?!) followed by the true and touching story of infamous “singer” Florence Foster Jenkins who scales operatic heights (often off-key). The season reaches a harmonic and hilarious conclusion with an aspiring girl group’s musical tour (de force)! We’re also pleased to announce our new reading series “page2stage” featuring new and developing works. Come share the joy and passion of the season in the comfort and style of our new seats!

July 7 – 23
Sponsored by Skidmore College

A rollicking new comedy about a love that dare not squawk its name!

Is the stuffy but steady English Lit Professor the true father of his son? Or is it the incredibly ugly Marine Biologist? Or the obnoxious French Waiter? Or the FedEx, DHL or UPS Delivery man? (Not to mention the aspiring Mime…) A simple question becomes hilariously convoluted when the power of Penguin Musk is unleashed on the unsuspecting mother! The LA Times named it a Best Bet that “yields plenty of laughter!”

Never has so little talent given so much joy, amazement & laughter!

A funny and touching look at Florence Foster Jenkins, the New York Socialite who thought she could sing, but couldn’t – at all! Her recitals became a sensation in the 1930’s with everyone in on the joke except her. Her “career” culminated with a recital at Carnegie Hall. It sold out in two hours! By the end of that concert, her understanding of music (and our understanding of her) will both change profoundly.

August 11 – 27
Sponsored by The Brooks and Joan Fortune Family Foundation

It’s 1957 and The Taffetas are making their National Television debut!

This four woman girl group sings hit after hit of the 1950’s as they desperately try to get chosen for The Ed Sullivan Show. Songs include such classics as “Mr. Sandman”, “Johnny Angel”, “Dedicated to the One I Love”, “Where the Boys Are”, “Sincerely” and many, many more!

Come and be part of developing the plays of the future with the Depot’s new play reading series, page2stage. The playwright of each script will be present and your comments, questions, thoughts and reactions may lead directly to changes in the next draft! It’s a great opportunity to experience new works as they develop and to help the writer make them even better! This year, to enhance the Depot’s commitment to serving its artists, each of the playwrights is someone already associated with the Depot Theatre.

The Depot Theatre, a not-for-profit organization committed to providing professional theatrical arts in the Adirondacks, has received a grant for theatre improvements from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust.

The Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust has awarded the Depot with a grant of $6,710 to replace the theatre’s aging lighting grid. “The new lighting grid will improve and expand the theatre’s technical capabilities for our designers and technicians,” said Kevin Cochran, the Depot’s Producing Director.

The grant provides half of the funds for the project, of which the remainder will come from the theatre’s recent theatre improvement fundraising campaign, which began last summer. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds for infrastructure improvements including new seats, new carpeting, aisle lighting, expanded WiFi service and other projects. “Improvements such as these allow us to fulfill our mission of producing professional theatre for our community,” said Erin Harrington, business manager at the Depot.

“We are so pleased that the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust has decided to support this important project,” said Amy McNamara, president of the Depot Theatre Board of Trustees. Donors to the theatre improvement campaign include numerous individuals from the community, the Charles R. Wood Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts.
